AB - The "Balanced Short Scale of Authoritarian Attitudes
(B-RWA-6)" presented below was developed and used as part of the Austrian
National Election Study (AUTNES) for general population samples (electorate).
The aim of the scale was a broad but economic recording of right-wing
authoritarianism (RWA) (cf. Altemeyer, 1981) as well as the application of
semantically oppositely polarized items in their measurement. The attempt was
made to cover three central facets or subdimensions of the superordinate
construct: (A.) the demand for the acceptance of supposed authorities and the
norms represented by them as "belonging to authority", (B.) support
for the punishment of individuals deviating from the norm as authoritarian
"aggression", and (C.) the demand for adherence to valid norms or
traditional traditions as authoritarian "conventionalism". Detailed
information on the theoretical embedding and quality of the scale can be found
in the following sections.
