AB - Cultural capital is%0Afrequently measured via the number of books in a respondent%27s household.%0ADespite this measures widespread use%2C its quality remains largely unclear. To%0Aremedy this%2C we conducted a comprehensive assessment of the measurement%0Aproperties of two items measuring past and present objectified cultural capital%0Avia the number of books in the household of the respondent%C2%92s family of origin%0Aand the respondent%C2%92s current household%2C respectively. For this purpose%2C we used%0Adata %28N%26%238201%3B%3D%26%238201%3B3260%29 from the Programme for the International Assessment%0Aof Adult Competencies %28PIAAC%29 2012 survey in Germany and the 2015 wave of a%0Afollow-up study %28PIAAC-L%29. We analyzed the two items%C2%92 distributions %28total%0Asample and separately by age-group%29%2C test-retest reliability over 3 years %28for%0Apast cultural capital only%29%2C and their convergent and divergent validity %28i.e.%2C%0Acorrelations with socioeconomic status%2C literacy and numeracy skills%2C and%0Acultural and literary activities%29.%0AOur analyses %281%29 reveal that%0Apast and present objectified cultural capital are substantially but not%0Aperfectly related %28%26%23961%3B%26%238201%3B%3D%26%238201%3B.52%29%2C which may reflect%0Aintergenerational transmission%3B %282%29 demonstrate that the item measuring past%0Aobjectified cultural capital shows high test-retest reliability over three%0Ayears %28%26%23961%3B %3D .74%29%3B and %283%29 attest to both the convergent and divergent%0Areliability of both items%2C as indicated by systematic yet only small to%0Amedium-sized correlations with socioeconomic status%2C literacy and numeracy%0Askills%2C and cultural and literary activities. At the same time%2C our analyses%0A%284%29 underscore that cultural capital is not a uniform construct%2C highlighting%0Athat the number of books captures a specific aspect of the concept %28i.e.%2C%0Aobjectified cultural capital%29. Our findings can serve as a benchmark for future%0Aresearch on cultural capital. %0A%0A
