AB - The Drive for Muscularity
Scale (DMS) by McCreary and Sasse (2000) has established itself internationally
as a reliable and valid measure of the drive for muscularity. This overview
summarizes the results of a psychometric review of a German-language
translation of the DMS (Waldorf, Cordes, Vocks & McCreary, 2014). The
reliability, factor structure and validity of the DMS and their subscales were
examined on two samples of a total of 535 men. The DMS showed high to very high
reliability characteristics. Although it was possible to replicate the
two-factor structure of the English-language version, a good model fit was not
found. The Multi-Trait-Multi-Method-Matrix provided convincing proof of
validity. Thus, striving for musculosity could be clearly distinguished from
striving for slimness and showed itself across different recording methods. The
German-language DMS represents a reliable and valid measure of men's muscular
striving for use in social science studies.
