AB - After decades of research
on the social and psychological determinants of xenophobia, there is an
increasing body of research investigating the psychological basis for interest
in contact with people from other cultures. This article presents a
German-language inventory of six motivational functions that contact with
people from foreign cultures can fulfil for the individual. These functions are
derived from a theoretical and empirical further development of the functional
attitude approach in the context of intergroup research (Stürmer & Benbow,
2017). The specific functions are related to basic needs that are addressed in
more general psychological theories: (1) Knowledge acquisition and
understanding (knowledge or object assessment function), (2) Value expression
(value expression function), (3) Professional development (instrumental or
utilitarian function), (4) Social development (social adaptation function), (5)
Care for personal image (ego-defense function), (6) Care for group image
(social identity function). Each function is measured with 5 items. The
psychometric quality of the inventory was investigated in empirical studies
using panel, correlation and experimental designs with over 1,600 subjects.
