AB - Empathy
is the ability to understand and empathize with other people's emotions.
Empathy seems to develop differently in the media context and in direct
communication. The scale of media-based empathy (MBE; Happ & Pfetsch, 2015)
represents a new scale appropriate to the diverse and digital use of media. The
four subscales are: Media sympathy, affective media empathy, cognitive media
empathy and immersion in video games. An identical factor structure and high
reliability were found in both a youth sample (N = 273) and an adult sample (N
= 373). Construct validity was confirmed by correlations with traditional
empathy, aggression, cyberbullying and media use. The subscale immersion in
video games plays a special role. The MBE scale thus offers an economic, reliable
and valid instrument for different age groups that captures empathy in a
differentiated way in the media context.
