AB - Need for cognition (NFC) as a dimension of cognitive
motivation encompasses the individual disposition of a person "to engage
in and enjoy effortful cognitive endeavors" (Cacioppo, Petty & Kao,
1984, p. 306). People with high NFC are characterized by a joy in thinking,
they experience intellectually challenging tasks as interesting and tend to
actively seek and reflect on information. NFC explains systematic differences
in people's commitment, especially to cognitively challenging and strenuous
activities. The NFC-Teens scale measures NFC in older children and adolescents
with 19 items. The NFC-Teens scale is the first German NFC scale for this age
group. Its reliability and validity is documented for grammar school pupils
from grade 5 onwards.
