National pride often has a negative aftertaste, since this term is often associated with an overvaluation of one's own national collective, prejudices against ethnic and religious minorities, and the proximity to a fascist ideology. Nevertheless, the positive evaluation of one's own nation is considered important: It can foster the integration of complex industrial societies and the acceptance of the political system, thereby promoting the stability of democracy (cf. Topf et al., 1990), the willingness to defend and the stabilization of traditional family structures (cf. Noelle-Neumann & Köcher, 1987).
