The Risk Proneness Short Scale (R-1) described herein measures the willingness to take or tolerate risks, with one item (completion time < 10 s). The scale is the English-language adaptation of the German-language scale “Kurzskala zur Erfassung der Risikobereitschaft.” The item of the German-language source version was translated into English using the TRAPD approach. Our empirical validation based on a heterogeneous quota sample in the UK showed that the reliability and validity coefficients of the English-language adaptation are satisfactory and comparable to those of the German-language source version. As an ultra-short scale, R-1 lends itself to the assessment of risk proneness particularly in survey contexts in which assessment time or questionnaire space are limited. The scale is applicable in a variety of research disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and economics.
