AB - Caprara et al. %282009%29 criticized existing measures of internal political efficacy for not taking into ac-count psychological theories of self-efficacy and for the resulting low construct validity. As an alter-native%2C they presented a ten-item measure called Perceived Political Self-Efficacy %28P-PSE%29 Scale. Based on social cognitive theory%2C it adopts a psychological understanding of self-efficacy and cap-tures the phenomenon in a more systematic and complete manner than previous measures of inter-nal efficacy. We translated the P-PSE scale to German and tested it in a German national quota sample%2C using quotas for age%2C gender and education %28N %3D 1025%29. We provided evidence on the scale%E2%80%99s construct validity %28by testing its correlations towards related constructs%29 and on its criterion validity %28by regressing political participation propensity on the P-PSE score%29. The scale explained %CE%94R2 %3D 26%25 of people%E2%80%99s propensity for political participation over and above sociodemographic varia-bles%2C and %CE%94R2 %3D 12%25 over and above previously existing measures%2C demonstrating its incremental value. We also tested cross-cultural measurement invariance towards an Italian sample%2C establishing configural%2C as well as partial metric and scalar invariance. In addition%2C we validated a four-item short version of the scale%2C which proved to be similarly valid as the full version. We argue%2C that these two measurement instruments provide a more adequate way of assessing internal political efficacy for research in German-speaking countries.
