AB - <p>Marital status and cohabitation provide information about the individual’s position in the context of partnership living arrangements. Both characteristics influence the social, emotional and also economic resources of the individual. Marital status is a legally defined status recorded in the German “Personenstandsregister” (civil register). It describes whether a person is or was married or in a registered civil partnership for same-sex couples – and if married or in a registered civil partnership, whether the marriage or civil partnership ended through divorce or dissolution of the civil partnership or death of the partner. Cohabitation refers to whether a person lives with a partner in the same household without being married to him or her. Cohabitation thus describes not a legal but a de facto status. The characteristic cohabitation complements the characteristic marital status, since cohabitation is a frequently encountered precursor or alternative to marriage today. From both characteristics, it can be derived whether someone lives with a partner in the same household, if it is assumed for married persons who have not separated that they live in the same household. If marital status and cohabitation do not have to be differentiated, this information can also be asked directly.</p>
